The mission of the NDBA is to advance the art and science of anesthesiology in dentistry in its efforts to provide optimum health care. The NDBA has been formed to recognize dentists' education and expertise in general anesthesia and evaluate their clinical skills with a written and oral examination. This will document clinicians' education and skills in dental anesthesiology and provides them diplomate status.

To become a Diplomate of the NDBA, one must pass an oral and written examination, offered each spring at the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology Annual Session. The requirements to sit for the NDBA Diplomate Examination are:

1. Active membership in the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology

2. Graduation from a College of Dentistry accredited by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association or one approved by the Board of Directors of the ADSA.

3. Completion of

a. Continuous full-time participation in a Residency in Anesthesiology Program acceptable to the ADSA Board of Directors

OR

b. An accredited Oral and Maxillofacial surgery residency.

Applications must be turned in by February 1 each year, and include documentation from the institution in which anesthesiology training was obtained, including start and completion dates.

Because the ADSA is the sponsoring society of the NDBA, the NDBA embraces all dentists who administer general anesthesia. The NDBA has been established to recognize dentists who have training and expertise in the administration of general anesthesia. Achieving Diplomate status of the NDBA will further ensure dentistry's ability to continue to provide high quality anesthesia care. Achieving Diplomate status also gives fellowship status to ADSA members.

The annual renewal fee to maintain Diplomate status will be $75.00 a year. In addition to the annual fee, Diplomates must participate in 12 hours of continuing education every two years. Additional information regarding the specific continuing education requirements will be forthcoming.

This is a very exciting opportunity for all dentists who are active Fellows of the ADSA to have their training and expertise recognized by the NDBA. It will also assure the public that these individuals are committed to offering high quality anesthesia services to their patients. We encourage every eligible member of the ADSA to become a Diplomate of the NDBA.
